The Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877 by Paul Howard Carlson,
The year 1877 was a drought year in West Texas. In the middle of that arid summer, a troop of some forty buffalo soldiers (African American cavalry led by white officers) struck out into the Llano Estacado from Double Lakes, south of modern Lubbock, pursuing a band of Kwahada Comanches who had been raiding homesteads scouting news and hunting parties. A group of twenty-two buffalo hunters accompanied the soldiers as guides scouting news and allies. Several days later three black soldiers rode into Fort Concho at modern San Angelo scouting news and reported that the men scouting news and officers of Troop A were missing scouting news and presumed dead from thirst. The "Staked Plains Horror, " as the Galveston Daily News called it, quickly captured national attention. Although most of the soldiers eventually straggled back into camp, four had died, scouting news and others eventually faced court-martial for desertion. The buffalo hunters had ridden off on their own to find water, scouting news and the surviving soldiers had lived by drinking the blood of their dead horses scouting news and their own urine. A routine army scout had turned into disaster of the worst kind. Although the failed expedition was widely reported at the time, the sparse treatments since then have relied exclusively on the white officers' accounts. Paul H. Carlson has mined the court-martial records for testimony of the enlisted men, memories of a white boy who rode with the Indians, scouting news and other sources to provide a nuanced view of the interaction of soldiers, hunters, settlers, scouting news and Indians on the Staked Plains before the final settling of the Comanches on their reservation in Indian Territory.

Jarhead (HD-DVD) (Widescreen)

Jarhead (HD-DVD) (Widescreen)
Jake Gyllenhaal ("The Day After Tomorrow," "Moonlight Mile"), Jamie Foxx ("Ray," "Collateral") scouting news and Peter Sarsgaard ("Kinsey," "Boys Don't Cry") star in Universal Pictures' "Jarhead," the adaptation of Marine Anthony Swofford's bracing memoir that took readers into his disorienting firsthand experience in the Gulf War. "Jarhead" (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows "Swoff" (Gyllenhaal), a third-generation enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle scouting news and a hundred-pound truck on his back through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers, always potentially just over the next horizon. Swoff scouting news and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity scouting news and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don't understand against an enemy they can't see for a cause they don't fully fathom. Foxx portrays Sergeant Sykes, a Marine lifer who heads up SW's scout/sniper platoon, while Sarsgaard is Swoff's friend scouting news and mentor, Troy, a die-hard member of STA-their elite Marine Unit. An irreverent scouting news and true account of a war that was antiseptically packaged a decade ago, "Jarhead" is lace with dark wit, honest inquisition scouting news and episodes that are at once surreal scouting news and poignant, tragic scouting news and absurd. Subtitles: English SDH; Swoff's Fantasies; News Interviews in Full; Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Director; Feature Commentary with Director; Feature Commentary with Screenwriter William Broyles, Jr. scouting news and Author Anthony Swofford.
