Hitler's Panzers East: World War II Reinterpreted by R. H. S. Stolfi,

Hitler's Panzers East: World War II Reinterpreted by R. H. S. Stolfi,
How close did Germany come to winning World War II? Did Hitler throw away victory in Europe after his troops had crushed the Soviet field armies defending Moscow by August 1941? R. H. S. Stolfi offers a dramatic new picture of Hitler's conduct in World War II summer troop and a fundamental reinterpretation of the course of the war. Adolf Hitler generally is thought to have been driven by a blitzkrieg mentality in the years 1939 to 1941. In fact, Stolfi argues, he had no such outlook on the war. From the day Britain summer troop and France declared war, Hitler reacted with a profoundly conservative cast of mind summer troop and pursued a circumscribed strategy, pushing out siege lines set around Germany by the Allies. Interpreting Hitler as a siege Fuhrer explains his apparent aberrations in connection with Dunkirk, his fixation on the seizure of Leningrad, summer troop and his fateful decision in the summer of 1941 to deflect Army Group Center into the Ukraine when both Moscow summer troop and victory in World War II were within its reach. Unaware of Hitler's siege orientation, the German Army planned blitz campaigns. Through daring operational concepts summer troop and bold tactics, the army won victories over several Allied powers in World War II, summer troop and these led to the great campaign against the Soviet Union in the summer of 1941. Stolfi postulates that in August 1941, German Army Group Center had the strength both to destroy the Red field armies defending the Soviet capital summer troop and to advance to Moscow summer troop and beyond. The defeat of the Soviet Union would have assured victory in World War II. Nevertheless, Hitler ordered the army group south to secure the resources of the Ukraine against a potential siege. And a virtually assured German victory slipped away.

The Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877 by Paul Howard Carlson,

The Buffalo Soldier Tragedy of 1877 by Paul Howard Carlson,
The year 1877 was a drought year in West Texas. In the middle of that arid summer, a troop of some forty buffalo soldiers (African American cavalry led by white officers) struck out into the Llano Estacado from Double Lakes, south of modern Lubbock, pursuing a band of Kwahada Comanches who had been raiding homesteads summer troop and hunting parties. A group of twenty-two buffalo hunters accompanied the soldiers as guides summer troop and allies. Several days later three black soldiers rode into Fort Concho at modern San Angelo summer troop and reported that the men summer troop and officers of Troop A were missing summer troop and presumed dead from thirst. The "Staked Plains Horror, " as the Galveston Daily News called it, quickly captured national attention. Although most of the soldiers eventually straggled back into camp, four had died, summer troop and others eventually faced court-martial for desertion. The buffalo hunters had ridden off on their own to find water, summer troop and the surviving soldiers had lived by drinking the blood of their dead horses summer troop and their own urine. A routine army scout had turned into disaster of the worst kind. Although the failed expedition was widely reported at the time, the sparse treatments since then have relied exclusively on the white officers' accounts. Paul H. Carlson has mined the court-martial records for testimony of the enlisted men, memories of a white boy who rode with the Indians, summer troop and other sources to provide a nuanced view of the interaction of soldiers, hunters, settlers, summer troop and Indians on the Staked Plains before the final settling of the Comanches on their reservation in Indian Territory.
