The Louisiana Native Guards: The Black Military Experience During the Civil War by James G. Hollandsworth,
Early in the Civil War, Louisiana's Confederate government sanctioned a militia unit of black troops, the Louisiana Native Guards. Intended as a response to demands from members of New Orleans' substantial free black population that they be permitted to participate in the defense of their state, the unit was used by Confederate authorities for public display troop deployment and propaganda purposes but was not allowed to fight. After the fall of New Orleans, General Benjamin F. Butler brought the Native Guards into Federal military service troop deployment and increased their numbers with runaway slaves. He intended to use the troops for guard duty troop deployment and heavy labor. His successor, Nathaniel P. Banks, did not trust the black Native Guard officers, troop deployment and as he replaced them with white commanders, the mistreatment troop deployment and misuse of the black troops steadily increased. The first large-scale deployment of the Native Guards occurred in May, 1863, during the Union siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana, when two of their regiments were ordered to storm an impregnable hilltop position. Although the soldiers fought valiantly, the charge was driven back with extensive losses. The white officers troop deployment and the northern press praised the tenacity troop deployment and fighting ability of the black troops, but they were still not accepted on the same terms as their white counterparts. After the war, Native Guard veterans took up the struggle for civil rights - in particular, voting rights - for Louisiana's black population. The Louisiana Native Guards is the first account to consider that struggle. By documenting their endeavors through Reconstruction, James G. Hollandsworth places the Native Guards' military service in the broader context of a civil rights movement thatpredates more recent efforts by a hundred years. This remarkable work presents a vivid picture of men eager to prove their courage troop deployment and ability to a world determined to exploit troop deployment and demean them.

Rag-Tags, Scum, Riff-Raff and Commies: The U.S. Intervention in the Dominican Republic, 1965-1966 by Eric Thomas Chester,
In April 1965, a popular rebellion in the Dominican Republic toppled the remnants of the U.S. backed Trujillo dictatorship setting the stage for the master tinkers of America's Cold War machine. In this groundbreaking study, Eric Thomas Chester carefully reconstructs the events that followed into a thriller of historical sweep, troop deployment and creates a stunning portrait of how the U.S. government -- from President Lyndon Johnson on down -- used the Dominican Republic as a tool of its imperial arrogance. Eric Thomas Chester explains how the U.S. intervention was in the tradition of gunboat diplomacy as well as a consequence of Cold War ideology, troop deployment and the Cuban Revolution. After the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Haiti in 1934 troop deployment and the initiation of Roosevelt's so-called "good neighbor policy", the United States had refrained from sending its own troops to intervene in Latin America. The 1965 invasion broke this pattern troop deployment and reinitiated an era of direct armed intervention in Latin America. The result was that by early May, with more than thirty thousand troops deployed, there was a greater U.S. military presence in the Dominican Republic than in South Vietnam. In this fascinating account, Chester makes extensive use of recently declassified diplomatic troop deployment and intelligence documents to offer a nuanced troop deployment and textured study of the workings of covert as well as diplomatic initiatives troop deployment and provides a thorough analysis of U.S. Cold War foreign policy in the region.
